Media: Shaping society and culture

219

Nothing is permanent except change. A continuous change in society and culture guarantees a vibrant and progressive society. Modern societies are passing through changes at greater speed. There are many factors behind this change but media is playing central role in molding society and culture ranging from an individual to society as a whole.

The biggest change in society is that media has become a necessary evil. It has equally penetrated into every fabric of society ranging from rural to urban areas, literate to illiterate families and from rich to poor people of society. Media is playing constructive as well as destructive role in changing society and culture.

Constructive role of media in molding society and culture

Media is changing our way to think, behave and understand this world. Freedom of expression and freedom of speech are getting true meaning in this world of media. Social media has become an ungoverned space. It has provided the people governed by authoritative rule with the chance to express their views.

Education has become a global chapter due to awareness given by media outlets. Modern man enjoys reading and listening views and opinions shared by international community. We are moving towards global culture, global thinking and global pool of knowledge. It is a symbol of matured society.

Destructive role of media in shaping society and culture

Media is increasing disinformation and uncertainty in the society. Negative forces are getting equal chance to work on their agenda. Rumours and phobias are on rise due to this reinless horse. Media has become top trend setter. It is eliminating boundaries of local cultures, languages and values.

Underdeveloped areas of the world are finding less chance to contribute in global culture. So biasness is increasing due to media.

An other negative trend in our society is the role of increasing E-socialization or electronic socialization. We have a long list of friends and followers on social media but facing isolation in real world. This E-socialization can’t fulfill the purpose of real world socialization.

Conclusion:

Media is shaping and molding our culture and society to change it into  a global one. In the long run less potent cultures will be diminished by media and a global culture will be enjoyed by the global society.
