All those ways and means which man has been using for communication are collectively called media. Media has deep and historical relation with human life. Its importance in the society is that of respiratory system in human body. In the contemporary age, it is often endeavored to find answer of the questions that how and when it came into being. Basic reason behind these questions is that we consider media, only the modern source of communication.

But the reality is, when we move back into the human history we soon come to the conclusion that media is as old as human being and this world are. In this way media has been playing great role in evolving modern society. In modern world power of media is increasing with the passage of time affecting almost all realms of human life. It will not be exaggeration that in modern world media is the true engine and respiratory system of the society.

Now we move to the core topic. When two men communicate with each other, the communication is done through media. Initially, human being could hear the sound of another man at a certain distance. Owing to the growing population, different methods were used to convey the messages. Man kept on using fastest means of communication and continued his journey to progress. At last, he managed to transfer his voice from one place to another through radio waves which is called the first ladder of the modern media. As time passed, years changed into months and months into weeks. Media is the main and important part of our development, which has brought unprecedented revolution in every sector of life. Now no one can deny the importance and power of media in modern world.

Media is the greatest source in providing life changing thoughts. In modern time, media is the fourth pillar of state after legislative, executive and judiciary. It is also known as mirror of the society. Media is playing central role in overall progress of any modern world society. One thing is remarkable that media has power to encroach its motives in the world.

Social impacts of media

Media is playing leading role in inculcating social changes in modern world. Its social impacts are outlined as under.

1. It gives voice to voiceless people.
2. It has given modern man the opportunity to listen different ideas and views at home.
3. Freedom of expression and freedom of speech have true meanings in this age but at the same time this freedom has become the root cause of many disputes at international as well as intra-national level along the lines of religion, ethnicity and politics.
4. Hypocrisy, rumors and war-mongering ideas are taking their roots deeper and deeper due to ungoverned nature of social media.
5. With the increasing role of media, family training and teacher-factor in personality development is dwindling as media has opened new vistas for youth exposure to national and international personalities.

Conclusion

Media has played the most important role in human society. No one dare in modern world to underestimate its role in shaping modern society. However it should work within legal, moral and cultural boundaries otherwise it will be the most lethal weapon of human history.
